The Spiritual Wisdom of Animals

Have you ever felt disconnected from your greatness? Do you ever wonder how you can find peace when you are surrounded by so much fear? Or how can you possibly find safety in the midst of all the uncertainty that surrounds us? Where do you look to find the power you need when you feel lost? One place to turn is to the animals.

I’ve spent most of my life exploring the hearts of animals and I’ve been blessed to enjoy their company, wisdom and energy for as long as I can remember. They have been my companions and my greatest teachers. Even today, I turn to animals whenever I need to remember who I AM.

Humans and animals share a special relationship. Everyday, trained therapy dogs allow disabled individuals to live independently. Animals also help to lesson depression and decrease feelings of isolation for people in nursing homes. School programs utilizing dogs have been shown to improve literacy skills, increase self-confidence, help children focus and encourage the love of reading. Specially trained dogs are brought in by law enforcement and search and rescue groups to assist in dangerous situations. Horses are recognized for their amazing healing powers and are often used to help people recover from trauma, abuse or physical disabilities.

If you open your life to an animal, any animal, your spiritual paths intertwine, and you become a better person because of it. Animals teach us to live in the moment and remind us of the power of mindfulness. They are skilled in the art of communicating through energy, and can teach us about the subtle energy vibrations that are all around us.

Animals act as spiritual guides and mirrors. Look at the behavior of the animals in your life and then open your heart and see if there isn’t a lesson for you. The excitable, out of control dog may be teaching you a lesson in patience. The frightened animal may be showing you the power of kindness. Even in death, animals teach us not to reject the moment because it is unpleasant, but to be fully present in the now.

The first time you open your heart and your life to an animal, you are changed forever – and for the better. You discover a joy and gratitude for everything in life. You appreciate another morning. You gladly explore new territory and you learn to see others as potential friends instead of enemies. You begin to understand that all life is connected. You care about the health of the planet and the people and animals that call it home. You understand that we can do better and be kinder. You learn to let go and live in the moment. You learn to forgive.

Walt Whitman probably said it best when he wrote –

“I think I could turn and live with the animals, they are so placid and self contained; I stand and look at them long and long. They do not sweat and whine about their condition. They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins. They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God. Not one is dissatisfied – not one is demented with the mania of owning things. Not one kneels to another, nor his kind that lived thousands of years ago. Not one is responsible or industrious over the whole earth.”

It’s been my experience that the spiritual wisdom of animals whispers; it does not shout. But if you listen carefully and open your heart, you will find a healing energy that leads to a life of peace, joy and compassion.
