Aromatherapy – Not Just For People

The term aromatherapy is being used to sell just about everything these days, from laundry soap to body wash to candles. But not everything labeled as “aromatherapy” provides health benefits.

What is the difference between aromatherapy with therapeutic grade oils and cleverly marketed synthetic fragrances?

Synthetically processed oils may smell nice, but they offer no health benefit.  The oils are created in a laboratory using synthetic chemicals and are often classified as fragrance oils or food grade oils. If these oils are used in food, they must meet FDA guidelines, however if they are used in aromatherapy applications, they do not have to meet safety guidelines.

A true aromatherapy product is natural and contains the oils, leaves, flowers, roots, bark, seeds and stems of the plant from which it is derived. The quality of therapeutic oils is influenced by how the plant is grown, harvested, processed, distilled and bottled. The use of essential oils to enhance and influence overall health of an animal or person requires high-quality therapeutic grade oils.

Aromatherapy has been utilized for healing since the days of the Egyptians. Essential oils may be inhaled, applied externally or taken internally. But before you begin administering oils to yourself, your pets or your family, it’s important to become educated in the use of oils.

Due to the high concentration of essential oils, less is more, especially when you are just beginning to use oils. Animals are very sensitive to the power of essential oils. Always dilute the oils before apply them to your animals. Some oils are toxic to animals and should never be applied.

There is a lot to know about aromatherapy essential oils. Get started by seeking out reputable teachers to hone your essential oil skills.  Check your local health food stores for classes or meet up groups on aromatherapy essential oils. It takes a little time to learn about these healing oils but it’s well worth the effort. Therapeutic grade oils can enhance the wellness and quality of life for you and your pets.
